GottFried Semper’s Four Elements of Architecture:

  1. The fireplace/the hearth
    • 1st sign of human settlement
    • “formed that sacred focus around which the whole took order and shape”
    • “the moral element of architecture
  2. the roof
  3. the enclosure
  4. the mound


The Glass House


This really stays true to the four elements and overall minimalism:

->centered around a hearth

->built on a hill (mound)

->the roof

->the enclosure



The Element House


-constructs spatial relationships

-built to minimize heat gain- ie hot air collection chimneys ->sustainability

-built to fibonacci sequence

-modular -> open system that generates growth
