Social Practice | Shelley Kendall

Thinking, mostly, of Khalik Allah’s introduction for his movie, “Field Niggas,” (2014) which documents the street life of the homeless and others in Harlem NYC.

Allah self-describes his work as something that has a lot of political layers, but is something he thinks of as more of a spiritual project, for himself and hopefully others.

This work has moved me mostly because I am severely reminded of the street life here in the city of Syracuse. The poverty, h0melessness, drug use, and relationship with the police resembles a lot of what I have encountered here in Syracuse (the city…NOT the university- important distinction).
