Communal Utopias for Architecture: The Barbican
This cultural living complex was deemed the future in utopian architectural models- but as the future arrived, it has been deemed an aristocratic prison for Londoners.
“utopian hope of radical social transformation as it was embodied within the modernist and neo-modernist avant-gardes”
It is interesting to see how at different points in time, the comparisons and critiques of utopia change. As the benchmarking of art movements progress, it seems possible that the context and message behind a work of art can change and therefore be placed within different contexts where the utopia exists- if you set up each piece as a “critical mirror to be held up to society” in a specific point in time.
